Discernment: Sparkles’ Word for 2024

I’ve been watching the state of the world lately, I think we can all agree, it needs Jesus. But even more to the point, most Christians have forgotten his teachings.

Let’s play a game called, “Case in Point.” It’s fun! Find your favorite famous pastor/preacher/bishop/evangelist and ask the following questions:

  1. Do they have a servant leader’s heart?
    – if not sure, the follow up question is: would they be willing to humble themselves to wash the feet of their church staff, including the maintenance team?
  2. Is their lifestyle extravagant and is the money being taken from the tithes & offerings from the church to support that?
  3. Are they willing to help those around them without cameras present or bragging about it later?

Those are just some starter questions. Feel free to add your own.

Also, with all the craziness in the world and differing information being pumped into our minds around the clock, how are supposed to know what to believe? This is where discernment comes in. I like to think of discernment as a filter. Filters can get clogged and dirty, if not properly maintained. To keep your filter cleaned and clear, you need to follow a few easy steps. A) Read your Bible. B) Meditate on the words. And most importantly, C) Keep in constant communication with the Heavenly Father.

In my Bible study a few weeks ago, we discussed the “WWJD” bracelets from the 90s, and what they were meant to convey. If my memory remembers correctly, it was to remind us to be compassionate towards others. Which Jesus had. It flowed from him. But people took it as Jesus was a pushover/doormat. Oh nay nay! I love to to remind people that Jesus also flipped tables.

There were traders of sorts that were selling doves for offering at the temple in the temple court. This is not what the law of Moses commanded on how to do offerings. So Jesus flipped their tables and drove them out of the courtyards. *In paintings of this event, they depict Jesus using a whip to do so, which I think is awesome.*

I’ve head that during the recent big sportsball event, there was a commercial that aired showing Jesus washing feet and saying that he loves everyone. Which is true, but it doesn’t tell the whole story. While Jesus loves everybody, he abhors sin. Love does not equal acceptance of lifestyle. Parents of drug addicts can still love their child, but not want to condone their lifestyle. They will practice tough love on them until the addict hits rock bottom and decides to get clean and sober.

Discernment is knowing what is morally right versus wrong.

Final thought: when was the last time you had your filter cleaned out?
