Dear Mary Barra,

Detroit Free Press

I’m going to address you because you seem to like the spotlight more than Mr. Farley (Ford) and Sr. Tavares (Stellantis).

You keep saying in the news that your UAW-GM workers are asking for too much of a wage increase. Do you know that the top pay of a machine operator, someone that works with microns, at your 3rd tier plants is only $24.22 an hour? That comes to about $50,000 a year without overtime and bonuses. Also, do you know that the national average wage in the United States is $28.42 an hour and approximately $58,000 year? You pay them less than average for skilled work! I get it. You’ve said you don’t like your components holding plants. Easy to know why. They make parts for internal combustible engines, not for unsustainable EV’s that you take money from the federal government to make and promote.

It’s not like GM pays you enough anyway. So, what’s a little kick back between friends?

I have friends who work at a GMCH plant. Many of them went without a raise for 8 years to help GM out when they had a bit of money problems. Did you know some of them have to work at least 12 hours a day and 6, sometimes 7, days a week just to make ends meet? I’m not sure if you fully understand the physical and mental toll that takes on a person. Yet, again, I get it. They are just faceless numbers to you.

I’m not sure the last time you had to grocery shop on a budget. I’m guessing you Instacart from Whole Foods. FUN FACT: ground hamburger is anywhere from $4.99 – $7.99/lb. Can you believe it? A few years ago, I could get sirloin steak cheaper than that. Amazing!

Another fun fact: the people on the floor are the ones who make you money. You have completely forgotten where you came from. You even forgot where your dad came from. Shameful!

Maybe, just maybe, if you are so concerned about GM’s profit margin, why don’t you take a wage cut? Instead of making $29 million a year, you went down to $25 million? Still a good wage and you can still afford the finer things in life.

Just something to think about when you’re complaining about the people who can’t walk after working their shift and just trying make their families lives better.

Yours truly,
Pope Sparkles
