In Need of a Fashion Revolution

There’s been so many columns written about what needs to change in women’s clothing, yet somehow, nothing changes. Well, they might have gotten worse. How fast the fashion fads change can give one whiplash. So let’s talk about some things that women and girls need from their clothing.

POCKETS

I don’t know about you, but I hate being told that women can’t have big pockets because women don’t want them. Why don’t we want them? Because fashion. We’re not allowed to have any bulky lines anywhere. Here’s the reality though. Most women past 23, want the big pockets! We need to fit things in there. I know we have to buy accessories to carry our necessities so the world can sell us more purses, how great would it be to have the convenience to have all your important things right there in your pants pocket?

T Shirt Material

Why is the jersey material for women’s t shirts so thin? I completely believe its so we are forced to buy a tank top or camisole to wear under those shirts. Why are allowing this? It is so ridiculous!

Jeans

Before the invention of leggings, most modern women’s casual wear was jeans. One of the biggest downfalls of denim is that it doesn’t have a lot of stretch. I know, there are some brands that have spandex in them so you can achieve a slimmer fit. I not talking about those. Those are a God send! I’m talking the sturdy ones. The ones you want to wear for work. Somewhere, the designers forgot that most women have curves. Especially after childbirth. Something about pushing an object the size of a watermelon through your hips make them widen for some odd reason. Yet, with sturdy jeans, they don’t have much hip/butt room unless get the W sizing. The only problem with that is it is really hard to find the W sizing outside of plus size. I can go to most stores and find 16W – 24W jeans. Every once in a great while, I might find a 14W pair. What about the women who have smaller waist but broader hips? Why are they not represented here?

Shorts

Is it just me or does it seems your only short length choices are booty shorts or capris? Why not Bermuda or anything mid-thigh? Why the extremes?

Shoes

This is just a gripe of mine. I was blessed/cursed with Dutch feet. Depending on the kind of shoe I’m buying, depends on what size I have to buy. Usually I wear an 11, but sometimes, I have to go with a size 12. But here’s the kicker! I also have wide feet. Yay! I know I can’t be the only female with wide feet, statistically that would be impossible. Yet again, under-represented in the fashion world. It seems that at least 98% of women’s shoes are medium width and because we’re women, most of us just suffer through it.

I say enough is enough!! Our voices need to be louder. We fight for changes on just about everything else in this country, but when it comes to what put on our bodies to present ourselves on a daily basis, it seems that we complain but never go much further.

I know there are some designers out there that do make the kind of clothing that I’m asking for, but they’re small time currently and aren’t that readily available to most Americans. I hope that one day that women’s clothing will become more inclusive. We need to start a fashion revolution!

Thank you for listening to my rant.
