Happy Birthing People’s Day?

This week we learned that it’s insensitive to Trans folks to use the term “mother” when describing females. Instead, we should use the more inclusive term “birthing people”.

But is that really more inclusive?

When using that term you alienate those of us who cherish being a mother. You also alienate anyone who can not give birth, those who have had miscarriages, and those who have adopted children.

The word mother is more than a description of a female. It’s endless sleepless nights, vomit covered clothes, matted hair, tears, sweat, fear. It’s watching your body change, potty training, celebrating big and small milestones, praying for your little one’s safety and health, desiring a shower and a nap, and grateful for both coffee and wine!

It’s not just about genitalia or chromosomes. So changing what we call mothers doesn’t make any sense.

You know what’s inclusive? Calling people what they are. I’m a mother, daughter, sister, wife, aunt, cousin, and eventually I will be a grandmother. I also happen to be female. I’m comfortable with any and all of those descriptors. I am not comfortable with birthing person.

Trans women are not women in the traditional sense. BUT, they are transitioning to outwardly appearing female. So, maybe we call people what they are striving to be! And a Trans woman will never be a birthing person. However, she can still be a mother, sister, aunt, wife, cousin, and eventually a grandmother.

So let’s celebrate our differences instead of beating each other up for being different.

Happy Mother’s Day to all moms!!! Whether that’s through giving birth or adoption! Every mom is unique and should be elevated for simply taking on the task of raising tiny humans. Let’s not diminish that by using such a sad term like birthing person.
